Gwynn's Death Renews Attention To Smokeless Tobacco Dangers

Unless you’re a smoker of cigars or traditional cigarettes, it might seem like there are a lot fewer people lighting up. In fact, sales of cigarettes are up nearly one percent a year — not a lot, but still an increase.

The death of Hall of Fame baseball player Tony Gwynn earlier this week — from complications related to cancer in parts of his mouth — has brought renewed attention to smokeless tobacco, sales of which go up about six percent annually.

Jeremy Kees, Marketing Professor at Villanova University, has done extensive research on cigarette warning labels. He says consumer education has led to fewer people overall using tobacco products, but that number has leveled off.
