Arizona State University has entered an agreement with the San Carlos Apache Nation in southeastern Arizona to develop a new tribal college. This is the first partnership of its kind for both the university and the tribe.
Through the partnership, ASU officials will be advising the tribe in the construction process and the formation of the college’s operating guidelines.
Eduardo Pagan is a spokesman for ASU. He said he hopes the agreement will increase the educational opportunities for people living on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
"This is something that I certainly foresee as empowering for their people to have a college in their vicinity that will allow their students to stay on the reservation and to get higher education," Pagan said.
The college planned for the San Carlos Apache Reservation will be the third tribal college in Arizona.
