Arizona saw an almost 10-percent increase in the number of residents living in poverty areas between 2000 and 2010. That’s according to new numbers from the United States Census Bureau.
Poverty areas are defined as having poverty rates of 20 percent or higher. In 2010, about a third of Arizonans lived in poverty areas and almost two-thirds of people living in poverty lived in such areas.
Cynthia Zwick, Executive Director of the Arizona Community Action Association said the numbers aren’t surprising.
