The end is near for the Compadre baseball stadium in Chandler. The one-time spring training facility for the Milwaukee Brewers will be torn down this month to make room for new homes.
The Chandler City Council voted to re-zone the site where Compadre has stood since 1986. It closed in 1997 and hasn’t been used since because the Brewers moved to Maryvale Baseball Park after Chandler decided not to pay for stadium improvements. Chandler spokesman Jim Phipps doesn’t expect too many people will be upset to see a wrecking ball take the stadium down.
“I would imagine that for some residents, especially those who’ve been here a number of years, maybe attended the games at the ball field that there is some pangs in their heart to see that facility go away but I think those lessened over the years because it wasn’t used,” Phipps said.
Standard Pacific Homes has purchased the property where it will build more than 300 single-family and townhomes. The new community will also include recreational parks and lakes.
