Arizona Unemployment Rate Up in June

Arizona’s unemployment rate rose slightly in June from May, and is still higher than the national rate.

The state’s unemployment rate increased a tenth of a percent in June, to 6.9 percent. Arizona lost more than 39,000 non-farm jobs that month, which is less than the 10-year average for June. Most of the job losses were in government, and many of those were seasonal losses in education, as schools are out for the summer.

Five industries added jobs in June, led by Professional and Business Services and Financial Activities. Between this June and June of last year, Arizona added almost 43,000 non-farm jobs, with almost all of them in the private sector. Education and Health Services and Leisure and Hospitality led the way in that regard.

The country’s unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percent in June, to stand at 6.1 percent.
