Arizona Congressman Co-Sponsoring Legislation For Central American Children

Arizona congressman Matt Salmon said he is co-sponsoring legislation to deal with the flood of unaccompanied Central American children that have been crossing the border.

The Phoenix area republican said a key provision is keeping them confined until they can see an immigration judge. Salmon believes the measure will end the crisis on the border.

“This ending of the catch-and-release policy is the single best thing that we can do to deter spending $5,000 to $8,000 per person from crossing the border,” Salmon said.

Salmon said the proposal includes putting the National Guard on the border and compensating states for that.

The legislation provides $1.5 billion in emergency funding, far less than the $3.7 billion President Obama has requested.
