Pipe and drum corp from all over Arizona pay tribute to fallen Phoenix Engineer Paramedic Gary Johnstone.

Phoenix firefighter Gary Johnstone was remembered Thursday at a memorial service. Johnstone died during a climbing accident last week at Camelback Mountain.

Johnstone was a member of the mountain rescue team and the department’s pipe and drum corps.

His paramedic partner Tony Sosa said Johnstone was part of his family.

"My children lover Gary so much. My children would come into the station and say hi dad, and GARRRY and they would run to Gary and get on his lap, because he was just a big clown and they loved him," Sosa said.

Also killed in the climbing accident was 15-year-old Trevor Coruse. He was the son of a Phoenix police officer.

Al Macias, former KJZZ news director, retired as KJZZ's news director in 2022. He rejoined the station as a features reporter in 2023 and also as a part-time editor in 2024.
