This week’s heavy rain and flooding have caused damage to irrigation canals in south Phoenix.
The damage totaled about 30 square miles, with the Laveen area the hardest hit. Salt River Project delayed irrigation deliveries to customers this past weekend. SRP has restored irrigation service to the entire area and said it will not affect agricultural users.
Jeff Lane of SRP said there is no estimate on how much it will cost to repair the system.
“To repair the damage to the laterals and the canal banks and the canal bank roads from the erosion and the flooding from the storm water that came down, it’s going to take us about two more weeks to get it all completed," Lane said.
The restoration will be implemented in three phases, beginning with the 7th Avenue to 23rd Avenue area. That work should be done by the end of this week.
