Sunland School In South Phoenix Temporarily Closes Because Of Water Damage

Sunland Elementary School has to temporarily shut its doors. The rain storm last week flooded the whole campus. The students will be moved to another school next week.

More than 600 kids, 200 computers and 26 smartboards in the elementary school will move to Sierra Vista School starting next week.

Roosevelt School District Spokesman Joseph Ortiz said the transfer is necessary because carpets, walls and shelves in many classrooms were water logged. “When the water first started running through it looked a little bit like a river. But I would say it was about ankle to shin deep,” Ortiz said.

The district doesn't know the total cost of repairs yet, but the district has insurance and Ortiz said that should cover most of the cost. School buses will take the students to the Sierra Vista, which is three miles east of Sunland. The school day will be delayed an hour and now go from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunland could be fixed and reopened as early as November.
