State's First Public Veterinary School To Open Next Fall

The University of Arizona is set to open the state’s first public veterinary school next fall.

Thanks to a $9 million grant, the U of A will open learning centers in rural Arizona to address critical veterinary shortages.

Shane Burgess is the Dean of the Agriculture and Life Sciences College. He said this program will give doctors of veterinary medicine hands-on, real-word training.

"It’s the first time a public university in Arizona is going to be able to provide training to DVMs, specifically focused on Arizona, specifically for Arizonans and specifically focused on tracking where the economy needs the DVMs to go," Burgess said.

Burgess said the centers will be built in Douglas, Yuma and Pinal County.
