The criminal investigation into the death of a mentally ill Phoenix woman who was shot to death by a police officer when she advanced on him with a claw hammer, will now be handled by the Department of Public Safety. Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia has handed DPS the investigation to regain the community’s trust of Phoenix police officers.
“The decision tells the community that we’re open to look at ourselves and that we’re open to allow other agencies to make those tough decisions for us, if we need to," Garcia said.
Once the Department of Public Safety concludes its review of the death of Michelle Cusseaux, County Attorney Bill Montgomery will review their findings.
