Tempe has become the first city in Arizona to include sexual orientation, gender identity and veterans in its city charter as protected classes from employment discrimination.
Voters approved the measure Tuesday by more than a two-to-one margin.
Prior to Tuesday’s vote, sexual orientation was a protected class under the city code, but amending Tempe's charter made those protections permanent.
As of 11 p.m. the measure had 62 percent of the vote.
