Cochise County Reports Problems With Vote Tallies

Cochise County elections officials say they’ve had to reprocess more than 20,000 ballots from Tuesday's election. The problem is being blamed on an apparent computer glitch.

Cochise County interim Elections Director Jim Vlahovich said technical difficulties with electronic ballot counting machines are being investigated. He said the problem was detected late Tuesday night when a test of the system turned up something unusual.

“It showed that voter turnout was 62 percent so we obviously thought that was a concern so we started investigating and discovered that the numbers were inflated,” Vlahovich said.

He said Cochise County sent its ballots to Graham County for a recount.

Vlahovich said it’s still uncertain whether the new count will change the outcome of any local races in Cochise County.

Meanwhile, Yavapai County officials said experimental electronic equipment at polling places that was not certified by the state malfunctioned, delaying its election results.
