On Jan. 8, 2011, 19 people—including then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords—were shot by a gunman in Tucson. Six of them died. Some say Giffords is alive in part because of the quick actions of Daniel Hernandez who, at the time, was an intern for the congresswoman.
Hernandez’s story is now the subject of a play by ASU professor and longtime playwright Guillermo Reyes. It’s titled “They Call Me a Hero” and is based on Hernandez’s memoirs. Reyes spoke about Hernandez and the play.
