The US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix may soon be going by a new name. American Airlines, which merged last year with Tempe-based US Airways, has decided not to renew the naming rights. The arena hosts sports events and concerts, and is managed by the Phoenix Suns basketball team.
John McDonald is a spokesman for American Airlines. These naming rights run through October of 2015, he said, but the arena could get a new sponsor before then.
"It’s a tremendous opportunity for somebody else to take that prominent position in the community from a naming-rights stand point," McDonald said, "and be equally supportive partners of the Suns as we have all these years.
The US Airways Center originally opened as America West Arena more than 20 years ago. It got its current moniker after America West and US Airways merged in 2005.
