Thousands Of Residents Need To Prove Citizenship To Maintain Health Insurance

More than 3,000 Arizonans will lose the health insurance they bought through the federal marketplace at the end of this month if they don’t provide officials with more information.

The Health and Human Services Department has been sending letters to people who failed to provide proof of citizenship or legal immigration status to prove they’re in the United States legally.

That number was 6,600 a month ago, but has gone way down as information is provided. Those who fail to provide citizenship proof are facing a Sept. 30 deadline to lose coverage.

They may however be able to quickly re-enroll if the documentation is provided.

The Affordable Care Act bars people without legal residency from buying insurance through the federal marketplace.

About 120,000 Arizonans purchased the policies between October 2013 and the end of March.
