The United States Supreme Court will consider a challenge by Arizona Republicans to the state’s congressional districting map.
Republican lawmakers are challenging the maps drawn by the Independent Redistricting Commission, established by Arizona voters 14 years ago.
Republican lawmakers maintain the U.S. Constitution exclusively gives the power to draw congressional districts to elected state lawmakers.
A divided panel of federal judges dismissed the suit, but the justices say they will review the ruling.
The Supreme Court says it will consider whether the commission is allowed to draw the districts under either the Constitution or federal law.
California, which also uses an independent commission, could be impacted by the high court’s decision, according to the Republicans’ arguments.
The high court will hear arguments on the case this winter.
