Phoenix City Council voted last week to delay the approval of a $103 million construction contract needed to revamp Sky Harbor’s terminal three. That deferral could result in an additional $1.9 million in costs.
On a 5-4 vote, city council agreed to take up the issue again on Oct. 15. Those who supported the move argued the extra time was needed to consider some financial details in the contract.
Deborah Ostreicher is a spokesperson with the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. She said the delay related expenses are the result of overhead infrastructure and staffing costs.
"For example, in this case we have project trailers that were being utilized by a team and were sitting there waiting for a construction team to go in," she explained. "And they are still waiting there and still being paid for."
The terminal three remodel will happen in three phases and cost an estimated $590 million.
