DPS: Tucson Man May Be Posing As Physician

The Department of Public Safety is looking for possible victims of a Tucson man they say has been posing as a physician.

Spokesman Bart Graves says a highway patrol officer became suspicious of Joseph Abeyta after he asked the officer for directions to the hospital in Coolidge and the officer told him there was no hospital there.

“Mr. Abeyta was wearing ah hospital scrubs, including a stethoscope around his neck and embroidery identifying him as Dr. Anthony Peña," Graves said.

Graves says Abeyta claimed he performed surgery at a Scottsdale hospital and worked at the Tucson VA hospital.

He says a ziplock bag containing various medications and a medical equipment bag were found in Abeyta’s vehicle.
