The Arizona Diamondbacks have named Oakland Athletics bench coach Chip Hale their new manager.

Hale will replace Kirk Gibson, who was fired with three games left in a disappointing season in which the Diamondbacks' record was a worst in baseball 64 and 98.

Hale managed in Arizona’s minor league system for six seasons and was the team’s third base coach from 2007 to 2009. He spent two seasons as third base coach for the New York Mets, before becoming Bob Melvin’s bench coach in Oakland the past three years.

During his time in Oakland, the A’s finished with 94, 96 and 88 wins.

Hale got a two-year deal from the Diamondbacks, according to CBSsports.com. Hale played in 333 major league games over seven years, with the Twins and Dodgers. This will be his first chance to be a big league manager, after being considered for jobs with the Mets, Mariners and Twins in recent years.
