Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords launched a nine-state tour to promote tougher gun laws Tuesday in Portland, Maine.
Giffords, who was severely wounded by a gunman in Tucson in 2011, is joining domestic violence advocates, law enforcement officials and others on the "Protect All Women Tour."
At a stop in Augusta, Maine, the former congresswoman urged law enforcement officials and domestic violence advocates to help her bring about change.
Speaking haltingly, but clearly, Giffords told the group “We can win elections,” urging them to join their voices with hers.
Her advocacy group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, calls guns and domestic violence a lethal mix, noting victims are more than five times more likely to be killed if the aggressor has access to a gun.
Arizona is one of the states in which the tour will stop.
