The end of Arizona’s ban on marriage between same-sex couples has state lawmakers staking out a range of positions on how they could respond.
The Legislature came under fire this spring when it passed a bill that would effectively have allowed businesses to deny service to gays and lesbians. It was eventually vetoed by Gov. Jan Brewer.
But in the wake of Friday’s decision not to appeal a ruling that overturned the state’s same-sex marriage ban, the Arizona Capitol Times reports there is both support and opposition among Republicans for a new measure along the lines of the bill Brewer vetoed.
Meantime, some Democrats want the state to approve new anti-discrimination protections for gays and lesbians and to eliminate an existing provision in state law that gives married heterosexual couples the preference in adoptions.
Lawmakers begin their 2015 regular session in January.
