The decision Friday by the state of Arizona not to oppose a court decision overturning the state’s ban on gay marriage led to a single-day record at the Maricopa County Superior Court Clerk’s Office.
Spokesman Aaron Nash said on average, they issue 98 marriage licenses a day but on Friday, that number was 292.
“We were fully staffed on Friday, so we were ready for that. We had people cross-trained if we needed them, but we were able to handle the volume with our regular staff,” Nash said.
Nash said since the licenses are good for a year, it’s likely not all of them resulted in an immediate marriage but he believes about 194 same-sex couples got the legal paperwork to get married on Friday.
