Proposed South Mountain Freeway Moves Closer To Creation

Getting from here to there in the Valley with your car has gotten tougher over the past 30 years.

That’s how long a proposed South Mountain Freeway has been more than a gleam in the eye of freeway planners and traffic engineers.

Last month, the Arizona Department of Transportation— along with the Federal Highway Administration— released the final environmental impact statement that moves the freeway creation process closer to the fast lane. And this week ADOT started sending letters to homeowners and businesses in the path of the proposed stretch along Pecos Road in Ahwatukee.

We spoke with Rob Samour, a Senior Deputy State Engineer for ADOT, and Pat Lawlis of PARC who is leading the opposition to the freeway. We also spoke with Jessica Gage, who owns a home in the path of the freeway.
