Arizona parks have more than 600 trails spanning thousands of miles. The State Parks 2015 plan outlines priorities for maintaining those trails.
Upkeep, access and maps rank as most important in the plan. Parks apply for grant funding based on the priorities laid out in the document. Dawn Collins with the Arizona State Parks worked on the plan.
“The intensity of the topic probably changed given the recent economic recession and funding cuts and staff reductions," Collins said. "Routine maintenance and protecting access might stay one of the top trail recommendations, but it’s even more important now than before.”
The plan is open for public comment until Nov. 19. The final version will be submitted to the State Parks Board in February. Parks can start applying for money in July.
