Christmas lights lining 16 blocks in downtown Glendale are ready to glow in the night sky. Crews have finished adorning trees and buildings with lights for the Glendale Glitters event. This year’s display has some new automation.

The 142 miles of lights are now all LED, which cuts down on the electricity usage by 20 percent. Doug Topham is the owner of Christmas Light Decorators, the company behind the colorful arrangement.

“With this new technology we will now have some trees this year that we can change any color we want. And not just between two colors between multiple colors." Topham said. "It can start out chartreuse, then it can go to red, it can go to green, then it can go to purple, it can go to pink, it can go to violet. And it can do that fast. But each bulb is programmable.”

More than 20 employees spent 5,200 hours stringing, hanging and attaching the 1.5 million bulbs. The city will turn on the lights the Friday after Thanksgiving and keep them on through Jan. 10.
