Now that Glendale has been picked as a site for the NCAA’s 2017 Basketball Championship, the city has other issues to deal with to get ready. One of the big ones is the cost of public safety for a major event.
Councilman Gary Sherwood says a funding source is needed in the future to handle such costs and Glendale shouldn’t be on the hook for all of it.
"We’re competing against states like Indiana, Texas, that have budgets of six, seven, eight million dollars a year for these mega events so to continue to be a player in that we’re gonna need that kind of funding,” Sherwood said.
Arizona lawmakers last year considered putting up $4 million for security for the Super Bowl, early next year, but the measure was ultimately rejected in the state Senate.
