An unfinished high rise in Chandler finds itself on the business end of an earth mover today. Many city residents considered the abandoned building an eyesore for more than eight years.
The demolition of what was known as Elevation Chandler began on Thursday and should last about a week.
The structure stands along the loop 101/202 interchange, in clear view of passing traffic. Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said the building was a remnant of the great recession.
"That’s kind of symbolic of the real estate crash of the mid 2000s in Arizona and the nation, for that matter, where anybody thought they could build anything and it would be successful," he said.
A new project is planned for the demolition site. According to Tibshraeny, this time around the mixed use structure was highly scrutinized before approval was granted.
