Arizona Sen. John McCain says despite the claims of the Obama administration, the U.S. economy still trails other developed nations.

The senator said the thousands of people picking up emergency food boxes during the holidays are just one indication the economy remains troubled. But, he said there are things Congress could do to create jobs and raise wages.

“Do a highway transportation bill. That is important not only to Arizona for as far as infrastructure but it requires jobs. Pass the XL Pipeline bill. That’s 8,000 new jobs right there,” McCain said.

McCain would also like to see tax relief to bring what he says is $1.5 trillion, sitting overseas, because the U.S. tax rate is the world’s highest.

He said that would also create jobs. President Obama said the U.S. has put more people back to work than all the other advanced economies combined. Addressing reporters this month, he said the U.S. is in the longest stretch of uninterrupted private-sector growth in its history.
