Thanksgiving Weekend Means Crowded Hiking Trails

Thanksgiving weekend also marks the start of hiking season. Camelback Mountain hiking trails will be crowded. The combination of local and holiday hikers will make for packed trails and scarce parking.

Gregg Bach with the Phoenix Parks Department said there are other ways to get to the Echo Canyon trailhead.

“You could bike to the trail," Bach said. "Get your hike in and then bike back to where you parked your car in one of the public parking areas. And I think there are some extra exercise benefits there and it also saves you that frustration and also helps alleviate some of those congestion and traffic issues.”

People who idle or park along nearby neighborhood streets are subject to fines and towing. Bach has other recommendations to avoid the frustration that comes along with the crowds. He suggests hiking at non-peak times or consider other mountains.
