Valley Hotels Quadruple Rates For Super Bowl Weekend

Good luck to any football fans still looking for a place to stay during the Super Bowl.

With Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale only about 10 weeks away, hotel room availability across the Phoenix area for that weekend is scarce and average prices have quadrupled, according to a new survey by CheapHotels.org.

The survey found that only 10 percent of Valley hotels still have rooms available between January 30 and February 2. Game day is February 1. Nearly all four- and five-star hotels are sold out, so those with availabilities are mostly budget hotels.

However, these budget hotels have jacked up their room rates by 345 percent on average, according to the survey, and in some cases it’s much higher.

The survey said the historic Gaslight Inn in downtown Glendale, about five miles from the University of Phoenix Stadium, is the most extreme example.

A room with one king-size bed dubbed the “Gentleman’s Parlor” is normally priced around $230 for a two-night minimum during this time of year, according to the inn’s website.

During the Super Bowl, the Gentleman’s Parlor is available for $3,600 for a three-night minimum. That’s more than 15 times the normal rate, and it’s even more expensive than what some hotels in New York and New Jersey were charging for last year’s Super Bowl game.

Larger chain and franchise hotels are also hiking their rates. The Travelodge Phoenix North, just off Interstate 17 near Cactus Road in Phoenix and about 22 miles from the stadium, is charging about $400 for king bed and two-queen bed rooms – more than six times the usual $45 to $59 daily rate.

CheapHotels reports that if football fans are willing to stay further from the stadium near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport or in a low-end motel, there are still some rooms available for under $200.
