Prescribed Burn Near Show Low May Cause Lingering Smoke

Smoke may be impacting some residents in eastern Arizona this week. A 900-acre prescribed burn will affect communities around the Whispering Pines area near Show Low.

Officials say right now the weather conditions are favorable for this kind of activity, but Carrie Templin, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Forest Service, said it’s too early to tell exactly how it will impact the fire and the resulting smoke.

"We anticipate based on what we’re seeing so far that smoke may linger in the area through the weekend," Templin said.

The prescribed burn is part of a larger effort to reduce the risk of extreme wildfires in the region by removing excessive undergrowth.

Templin said traffic on nearby highways should not be impacted.
