Governor Jan Brewer announced yesterday afternoon Arizona would join the multi-state lawsuit that aims to overturn President Obama’s recent executive actions on immigration.
Texas is leading that effort. With Arizona, there are now 18 states on the suit. But, Arizona wasn’t one of the states that originally filed suit on Wednesday, although it’s already involved in a similar case, over the President’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
State Representative John Kavanagh is happy Arizona signed on to this new suit.
The state hasn’t been too successful in court in the DACA case. A federal appeals court has blocked the governor’s policy of not issuing drivers’ licenses to people in the program, but she plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Marielena Hincapie is Executive Director of the National Immigration Law Center, which is the lead counsel on the DACA case. She’s not surprised Arizona joined the multi-state suit.
