Border Patrol Agent Injured In Assault Near Ajo

The Border Patrol says one of its agents was assaulted over the weekend on the Tohono O’odham Reservation west of Tucson.

The Border Patrol says the agent was responding to a call near the town of Gu Vo, about 60 miles west of Tucson and east of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, when he was assaulted.

The unidentified agent, who is assigned to the Ajo station, suffered facial cuts and a fracture of an orbital bone that required 22 stitches.

Spokeswoman Vivian McLaughlin with the Tucson Sector, says agents are looking for a Mexican citizen in connection with the incident.

“A person of interest has been identified as Carlos Manuel Pena Nieblas, a citizen of Mexico,” McLaughlin said.

She says the FBI is assisting in the Border Patrol investigation. The agency has set up a tip line for use by people who may have information on the incident.
