Mesa has been experimenting for the past couple of years with a new way of operating its 911 system.
Officials said it’s led to faster, more cost-effective responses and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have awarded the city with a three-year, $12.5 million grant to expand the pilot program and collect data on how it’s working.
Steve Ward is Deputy Fire Chief and program manager for the CMS grant. He said responders are focusing more on what callers actually need, calling it a right-sized response.
