The recount in the 2nd Congressional District is getting closer to the finish line.
Republican Martha McSally beat Democratic incumbent Ron Barber by 161 votes, sending the race into a mandatory recount.
The district includes half of Pima County and all of Cochise County, and both have finished their electronic recount. In Pima County, nearly 186,000 ballots were counted in District 2.
The next step is for both counties to complete a hand recount of 5 percent of polling place precincts. These are expected to be finished by Monday.
The results will then be reported to the Secretary of State’s office.
McSally’s lead of fewer than 200 votes triggered the recount. The retired Air Force colonel has already been taking advantage of her tentative win. She attended freshman orientation a few weeks ago in Washington and now has been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee.
Arizona’s 2nd District includes Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and Fort Huachuca, an Army post.
Barber is currently on the Armed Services Committee.
