The city of Tempe wants to reduce the amount of water its residents use by as much as 600 million gallons. This is a new goal the city wants to reach by 2020. To help make that happen, the city is expanding its current initiatives and adding a new one.
Starting in January 2015, a larger rebate amount will be offered for a more efficient low-flow toilet. And the landscaping rebate will now be based on square footage rather than a flat fee. The newest program is the greywater system. Tempe spokeswoman Melissa Quillard said residents can receive a rebate to help install the system in their home.
“This is up to a $200 rebate when you create a greywater system in your yard. So what that means basically is using your water primarily from your washing machine and re-routing it to water your garden, to water your backyard,” Quillard said.
Tempe is also expanding its home water audit program by adding more staff. The free service includes analyzing water use and checking pipes for efficiency.
