Phoenix is looking for a new police chief. About two years after hiring Daniel Garcia, the city manager fired him yesterday for holding a press conference after being told not to.

But there were other controversies, especially between Garcia and the rank-and-file officers.

Joe Yahner is the Acting Police Chief, a position he held before Garcia was hired.

The decision to fire Garcia was City Manager Ed Zuercher’s. Mayor Greg Stanton says he agrees with the move, saying insubordination is not acceptable.

Someone who expects her voice to be heard is Tia Oso. She’s the Arizona organizer for Black Alliance for Just Immigration, and says Garcia’s firing took people by surprise. But she also said his tenure was not without controversy.
