Measure To Block Tribal Casino Near Glendale Fails

A bid in Congress to block tribal gaming on the edge of Glendale has failed. The U.S. Senate wrapped up for the year without voting on Sen. John McCain’s bill.

It would have blocked the Tohono O’odham casino in the west valley. A similar House bill failed last year. That means opponents of the casino would have to start over when the new Congress takes office next month.

With the city of Glendale now siding with the Tohono O’odham after the tribe agreed to give the city $25 million over the next two decades, winning approval of the anti-casino measure may be more difficult.

The tribe, which has broken ground for the project hopes to have the casino operating in the third quarter of 2015.
