Officials with the Coconino National Forest are welcoming a winter storm system that could bring several inches of snow to northern Arizona. The agency said the extra moisture is needed to complete several prescribed burns.

The treatments are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

Crews will be burning debris piles in multiple areas near Flagstaff. Smoke from the project is expected to be minimal, but should be visible from I-17.

Officials say they’ll continue efforts on Friday and into next week if the area receives enough moisture over the next few days.
