2014 started out pretty dry across the state. That is, until the monsoon season kicked in. But several rain events, including September’s rainstorm which flooded one Valley freeway and several neighborhoods, helped make up for some of the shortfalls.
It was called historic, that rainstorm that dumped some five inches over parts of the Valley in September. Another monsoon storm the month before wasn’t as severe, but it still damaged roads and homes. While both storms left some residents with a massive clean-up job on their hands, they did help mitigate rain deficits in the Phoenix area. But it didn't exactly push us over the edge in terms of our annual total.
"Looks like rainfall was right around normal, it was actually higher than last couple of years because we were a couple inches short at least, but 8 inches is right around where we should be," said Chris Kuhlman with the National Weather Service in Phoenix.
Despite a lot of rain this year, he says the state and the Phoenix-area are still experiencing moderate drought conditions.
