Navajo Nation To Hold Special Election Next Summer

The Navajo Nation will hold a special election for the tribal presidency next summer. The move comes after the Nov. 4 general election was postponed.

The Navajo Nation Council has approved a bill to move forward with a special election, months after a deadline set by the Navajo Nation Supreme Court.

The Daily Times reports the bill, which was passed Tuesday, calls for a June 2 primary election, followed by an Aug. 4 general election.

The election was postponed after former Navajo presidential candidate Chris Deschene was disqualified due to his lack of fluency in the Navajo language. Under the bill, all 17 candidates who ran in last August’s primary can run again.
