How Lawmakers, Governor May Try To Deal With State's Budget Deficit

When state lawmakers come back into session a week from Monday, many will probably do so with a sense of deja vu.

Arizona is again facing a budget deficit, about $1.5 billion between the rest of this fiscal year and the new one that starts in July.

Today, we’ll get a sense of how the legislature and governor may try to close that gap, starting with Jim Small, editor of the Arizona Capitol Times.

A huge budget deficit is nothing new for a lot of Arizona lawmakers. John Kavanagh has been the House Appropriations Chair, but he’s taking a state Senate seat later this month and will serve as vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He says history is repeating itself.
