The Court Ruling For Medicaid Expansion Raises Opposing Views

The Arizona Supreme Court this week ruled a group of state lawmakers does have standing to sue over the funding mechanism for Arizona’s Medicaid expansion. The legislators argue it’s a tax, which under the state constitution requires a two-thirds vote in both chambers to pass. The plan received a simple majority.

Christina Sandefur is senior attorney at the Goldwater Institute and is representing the 36 lawmakers challenging the hospital assessment. Not surprisingly, expansion supporters see things differently.

Greg Vigdor is president and CEO of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association.
