An apple-packing plant linked to an outbreak of listeria in Arizona and 10 other states has expanded its product recall. It now includes all of the company’s Granny Smith and Gala apple shipments from 2014.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the apples may be sold under various brand names – or no brand at all. The agency recommends consumers ask their grocer if they stock apples from Bidart Bros.
Late last month, this recall only affected caramel-covered apples from the California-based company. The FDA linked those products to 32 listeria-related illnesses and at least three deaths.
Listeria is especially dangerous to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system.
