More than 50 years ago, civil rights activists started what came to be known as Freedom Rides, desegregation efforts throughout the South. Two participants are in the Valley this weekend: Claude Liggins, who’s black and originally from Louisiana, and Carol Ruth Silver, who’s white and originally from Boston.
Each was arrested in Jackson, Miss. and spent time behind bars in the early 60s. I asked Silver what led her to join the freedom rides.
Silver and Liggins will be taking part in a panel discussion Saturday night at the Chandler Center for the Arts.
