Some Valley residents may hear the sounds of a low-flying helicopter starting Thursday.
The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration is planning to survey swaths of Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe and Scottsdale to measure naturally occurring radiation ahead of the Super Bowl. Agency spokesman Darwin Morgan said the effort is designed to support local law enforcement security efforts.
"If there's any information that comes about that may be some type of radiation device, improvised nuclear device, whatever it may be, that is being targeted for an event, then we can come back, re-fly very quickly and see if there is something that’s there in place," he said.
Morgan said the helicopter will fly as low as 150 feet as it covers some 22 square miles. The sweeps will go through Jan. 28.
