Arizona is among the states with the worst highway safety laws, according to a report by Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. The state is one of only seven that doesn’t have a ban on texting and driving.
“There are a few ordinances around the state that do address this issue," said AAA spokeswoman Michelle Donati. "But really until there is a comprehensive statewide ban on the practice people think they can do it in one place and not the other.”
The advocacy group’s report highlights other lax traffic laws that contribute to danger on the roadways. State law doesn’t require motorcyclists over age 17 to wear helmets. And police officers can only cite drivers for not wearing seat belts when they are pulled over for another roadway violation.
