Officials Reopen I-17 After Wrong-Way Crash Closes Northbound Lanes

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a wrong-way crash on I-17. The incident shut down the interstate’s northbound lanes for several hours this morning.

The crash occurred just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. DPS spokesman Tim Case said an officer was in the area when the wrong-way driver got on the interstate and tried to intervene.

"So the vehicle entered at Northbound Glendale going southbound. Got over. The officer tried to do a traffic break to try to stop traffic and possibly stop the vehicle. The vechile went around him and that’s when the vehicle contacted two other vehicles," Case said.

Three people have been taken to the hospital. The driver and the passenger of the wrong way vehicle are being treated for minor injuries. One person is in critical condition.

Case added that officers haven’t ruled out DUI as a factor in the crash.
