Officials with the Maricopa County Air Quality Department said concentration levels of air pollutants were down significantly in 2014.
Agency spokesman Bob Huhn said the number of days the air in Phoenix exceeded federal pollution standards last year was the lowest the area has seen in more than a decade.
"We did not have an exceedance on either Christmas eve, Christmas day or New Year's or New Year's Day,"Huhn said. "And, of course if we go to non-attainment, that means stricter fines, stricter regulations and possibly loss of federal funds down the line."
Huhn credits the improvement to favorable weather conditions and the county’s “no burn” campaign.
